How does a hydrogen station operate?
 

 

The operational mechanism of a hydrogen station closely resembles that of a conventional gasoline or diesel service station.

 

It comprises storage facilities, a compressor, and a pump through which hydrogen is dispensed to vehicles. Renewable hydrogen can be generated either through electrolysis or by reforming natural gas. Production may occur onsite at the refueling station itself, known as a hydrogen station, or at a separate location, termed a hydroline station. In the case of hydroline stations, hydrogen can be transported either through a gas pipeline (referred to as a hydrogen pipeline) or via hydrogen bottles transported by road (known as MEGC).

 

The dispensing process involves pumping hydrogen into the vehicle through a dispenser similar to those found at traditional gas stations, albeit with adaptations tailored to the physical properties of hydrogen. As hydrogen is an extremely volatile gas supplied at high pressure, the procedure requires bringing the vehicle close to the pump and connecting the dispenser for a swift, clean, and safe refueling experience, typically taking less than five minutes.
