How Does Liquefaction Plant Work?

Transporting compressed gas over long distances by pipe can be costly and time-consuming. However, by cooling natural gas to -162°C, it transforms into liquid form, reducing its volume by 600 times. This enables gas transportation by ship, a process facilitated at LNG plants. The liquefaction and cooling of LNG are achieved through thermodynamic refrigeration cycles, occurring in cryogenic heat exchangers that absorb heat from the natural gas. Flash gas and BOG can be utilized as fuel for onsite power generation.

There are primarily two types of liquefaction processes: the classical cascade process, which employs different refrigerants vaporizing at varying temperatures, and the mixed refrigerant cycle, utilizing a continuous blend of refrigerants for cooling. Regardless of the method, the end product is LNG, stored in cryogenic tanks onsite before shipment.
